The Chicago School of Woodworking LLC, uses a progressive skills based approach to teaching. Through a series of courses, students learn the fundamentals of furniture construction; from the nature of wood, through the use of hand tools, to the use of machinery. Upon completion of the series, students have the opportunity to continue their education by constructing independent projects using the school's machine shop and bench room. Advanced classes will be open to graduates of the series.

I am a master craftsman, traditional furniture maker originally from Ireland. I specialized restoring period antique furniture at Ireland's top antique dealer. I have over 27 years experience in the craft of hand crafted furniture. I have previously taught apprentices in Ireland and taught for 2 years at a further learning center for steelworkers in Burns harbor. The Shop Equipment and Joinery Workshop is a six-hour course divided into two three-hour sessions. In the first session, students learn shop safety and proper equipment usage including: table saw, panel saw, mitre saw, jointer, planer, wide belt sander, bandsaw, router, mortiser, and shaper. In the second session, students receive hands-on instruction in basic woodworking joinery including tongue and groove, mortise and tenon, rabbet joint, and dovetails. In this course you will be carefully trained by a professional woodworker who will oversee you at every level, with strong emphasis on correctly identifying how to use tools properly and safely. The goal of the class is to expand your knowledge of woodworking and woodworking tools. Each participant will complete three furniture projects. The course runs for 10 weeks and is 3 hours long. You are required to bring your own safety glasses. All other materials are included with your fee.
